The rebuilt organ

St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Goring-on-Thames - Organ Rebuild 2022/23

Elizabeth Parkinson asked me to photograph the rebuilding of the organ, which was last rebuilt in 1930 (and several times before that)

The images here were taken between 22nd April 2022 just before the start of the Project, and 18th February 2023 when a Gala was held to celebrate the end of the first part of the project
.
Dismantling began on Tuesday 26th April and I have recorded the work as it progressed.
Screen and dummy pipes in what was originally a window
The console and fancy dummy pipes in another original window.
The old console
Some of the original large and decorative pipes.
The electric blower in it's own building.

Wednesday 26th April and it's all happening!

New 'room' created above the bellows chamber
Largest an heaviest of the new components installed
New bellows being fitted
Clever bracket to keep things in line
New bellows
Hundreds of pieces, thousands of holes.
Each hole takes on lead organ pipe
Hole is burned to prevent corrosion
All different sizes
More pieces for assembly
Pipes in store, cleaned and ready to fit.
Some of the gear
Solenoids - very powerful I'm told.
Each hole being fitted with expandable seal
Slider guides being fitted
Bellows covers fitted
Sound boards all in place
Looking up at the sound boards
The rear of the console

25th October - Progress installing new bellows and pipes
Some new, and some old pipes
Awaiting more pipes

18th November. Console now in place and being tested
Keyboards, stops and pedals are all new.
The supporting structure is the original
New Pedals and foot operated stops
New keyboards and stops
The screen going back into place
Temporay blower

Lots of pipes, old and new going in along with the solenoids, computers and miles of wiring

And finally the organ is complete and ready to entertain again.
